The Senior School
'' Three weeks into my time here as the Head, my wife and I were called to a meeting with my son's tutor. He was doing GCSEs at the time. In the nicest possible way, we were being told that he wasn't working hard enough. We addressed this with our son, who claimed that he was working hard - I pointed out that this obviously wasn't 'Stonar working hard'. With firm, but kind and supported encouragement from teachers with whom he built positive relationships, he raised his game and achieved GCSE results beyond our expectations. All the while, this never compromised his general sense of happiness and enjoyment of the school.
As parents we all want our children to be happy, but if we are honest with ourselves, we want them to do well too. These are not mutually exclusive aims. In the Stonar Senior School there is the underlying expectation that you will work hard. However, the freedom from negative peer pressure to be 'too cool for school' and the absence of a sneering back row means that intellectual curiosity and a desire to do well do not place children outside the social norm. Indeed, one pupil described it to me as 'just what we do here'.
I commend this Senior School section of our website to you and hope you enjoy the ambitious, progressive and diverse academic and extra-curricular content. "
When benchmarked against over 10,000 pupils of the same ability across the UK, Stonar pupils achieved a grade and a half better at GCSE in 2020."
