Life As A Sixth Form Student

We encourage our Sixth Formers to embrace leadership opportunities. Our Head Pupil and Prefect team lead the school, while peers choose to supervise activities in the Prep School or help out in the boarding houses. 

The Year 11/12 committee plans events and activities for the next academic year, ensuring a match with students’ interests. The choice is wide and there are trips and challenges that broaden pupils’ horizons and prepare them for the wider world. 

We also host the annual Globeducate Student Leadership Summit, welcoming 34 students from 13 Globeducate schools from across the world. Each student who attends is invited as part of their role in their school as student leader - Head Pupil or Deputy Head Pupil. The event includes a packed timetable of seminars, presentations, and interactive activities on topics such as public speaking, communication and problem solving.
 

Widely-recognised, the DofE is very popular with our Sixth Formers who can take their Gold Award via the Explorer Scout group. It is a rewarding journey that develops independence, initiative and confidence and can open doors. Comprising five sections: skill, physical, volunteering, residential project and expedition, we organise a comprehensive training program for the expeditions and support for the other elements.

Fortnightly Explorer Scouts (Years 10-13) meetings are within our grounds. Pupils learn skills such as campfire cookery and night-hiking, as well as taking part in exciting trips such as caving and climbing. 
 

There are many sports on offer, catering for all abilities and interests, and all Sixth Formers take part. There are opportunities to pursue swimming, cross-country, tennis and athletics. Sixth Formers can also take part in team sports such as hockey and netball. Our well-equipped fitness suite is also open to Sixth Formers.

Our Equestrian Centre provides regular tuition; pupils can fit riding around their timetable and can compete at NSEA competitions, British Eventing and unaffiliated events. 
 

There are ample opportunities for pupils not taking drama and music as academic subjects to get involved with arts. Peripatetic teachers, music groups, the Senior School production, and inter-house music and drama competitions all provide a rich, creative dimension to life. 
 

Annual trips take place to the Houses of Parliament where pupils learn about government and democracy. A trip also runs to Oxford University to give pupils an insight into university life and to encourage them to aim for the very best institutions. As well as structured trips, students can head into Atworth, Bath or the surrounding area with the permission of their houseparent. Students can bring their own cars with them and are also permitted to use public transport. 

You will be under the care of a highly experienced Sixth Form Mentor. The Mentor is the first port of call for students and parents for academic and pastoral support throughout your two years in the Sixth Form. Each Mentor has a small group of students for which they are responsible, ensuring a highly tailored and individual approach in these crucial final years. 
 

Sixth Form students benefit from exceptional teaching. Our small class sizes help to develop positive and productive relationships between staff and students. Stonar teachers are as ambitious for your future as you are and are happy to support you and talk over any issue.
 

Our Sixth Formers are based in York House (girls) and Hart House (boys), each with its own dedicated Houseparent who lives onsite with their own family. You will be looked after and supported by the Houseparent academically and pastorally. Houseparents organise activities and ensure that everyone gets involved.
