Reading is at the heart of everything we do. We offer a core of quality texts from our well-stocked Prep library - and our experienced librarian will find something for everyone, meaning children leave Prep with a love of reading for pleasure.

Writing in Prep is linked to the core texts. We provide children with tasks that are focused on an audience, have a clear purpose and are contextual. Children have time to draft and edit, learning that writing is an art form and they build on their skills as they advance through Prep.

We follow a specific programme for phonics in the Early Years (Read, Write, Inc) that enables children to read quickly and confidently. This ensures a strong grounding for each individual to access the rest of the curriculum as they progress in their Prep years.
 

Spanish

This starts with an initial exposure to Spanish in Nursery and Pre-Prep, where nursery rhymes and songs are enjoyed as part of the daily routine. For pupils in Key Stage 2, we focus on enjoying language learning whilst providing them with solid building blocks on which to base future language study.

Each year group follows a uniquely designed curriculum closely linked to their foundation topics whilst incorporating core language skills. By Year 6, children complete fun projects that help them to develop a love of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. In addition to Spanish, Year 6 pupils are encouraged to take part in the annual Junior Language Challenge competition and there is an exchange trip to Barcelona every two years for pupils in Years 5 and 6.

The aim is to break down the stigma that language learning is difficult so that they approach Senior School with an open mind and a hunger to learn more.
