Careers & University Advice 

Some students have a clear idea of the career path they would like to follow and others are less sure or unaware of the vast array of career options. We provide regular seminars/webinars where pupils hear from speakers about their careers, career paths and linked opportunities; the sessions are followed by a Q & A. These events take place during the school day and are available to pupils in Year 9 and above. 

In Year 11 and the Sixth Form, we encourage students to engage in some form of work experience. For students applying for degree courses in health care, education and law (amongst others) work experience is a vital part of their application. Although some families have contacts for arranging work experience, we can find suitable and valuable placement experiences. We also support students who choose to use the time after public exams in Year 11 or the summer holiday period.
 

Stonar, as part of the Globeducate family of schools, also has a partnership with Crimson Education. Although they are primarily focused on supporting the university application process, they also provide careers information in a series of online talks and resources, and some opportunities for internships.
 

The UCAS website also has a helpful section where pupils can explore different career options.
 

Students can explore which careers suit their skills and interests, as well as useful tips about university and employment. There is also a ‘parent zone’ which gives parents further targeted information, ranging from GCSE choices to university funding. 
 

Students develop vital skills for supporting applications and become prepared for work via:
 

• Leadership and Teamwork courses
• Etiquette workshops
• CV creation and writing application letter writing classes
• Interview techniques and practice, and body language courses
• Public speaking programme and communication skills training

A new initiative is the Elite Universities group. This is an opportunity for students planning to apply to elite universities to meet and engage in academic discussion in a variety of fields, increasing their exposure to more challenging cultural events.
 

The Head of Sixth Form, supported by a team of experienced Sixth Form mentors, oversees all university applications both in the UK and abroad. The process begins with a seminar/webinar for students and parents to explain the UCAS and university application process. Students can then attend the UCAS exhibition which includes representatives from all UK universities, as well as opportunities to speak to other employers such as the armed forces or investigate apprenticeships with companies such as Dyson. 

All students receive 1:1 mentoring throughout the UCAS process, as well as support in applying for additional aptitude tests such as the BMAT and LNAT (for medicine and law). 

For those students applying outside UCAS, whether that is universities outside of the UK, apprenticeships, or the world of work, the Sixth Form team is on hand to help with letters of application, supporting documentation, references, portfolio development and interview training. 

The Crimson Education App also has valuable advice for university applicants, particularly those wishing to go to university outside of the UK. The app gives access to webinars and information as well as more bespoke advice and training for individuals.
