Adventure Training

Explorer Scout Group

Stonar's Explorer Scout group gives pupils from Year 9 the chance to get out and about, learning skills such as campfire cookery, map reading and bushcraft skills, and put those skills to the test with night hikes and camping. Our Scouts also go on trips to try activities such as caving or climbing, and embarking on arduous challenges such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The DofE is a popular activity for pupils at Stonar. All pupils from Year 9 upwards are encouraged to complete their Bronze DofE award. The award is in four parts: skill, physical recreation, service and the expedition. This is an award that requires commitment, perseverance, and a huge amount of teamwork. Those who enjoy the Bronze award (or the sense of achievement that comes from completing a challenging expedition) can continue with their Gold award in Sixth Form. The Gold award is looked upon very favourably by universities and employers alike, due to the level of soft skills needed for its completion.

Ten Tors

The Ten Tors Challenge is attempted by 2,400 teenagers in 400 teams of six. The teams navigate routes of 35, 45 or 55 miles (depending on age) over the Northern half of Dartmoor, visiting ten nominated tors or check points in under two days. Teams must be self-sufficient, carrying all that they need to complete their route and stay out overnight safely. In the 2021/22 academic year, Stonar entered a team for the first time, for the 35 mile route. This is now a mainstay in our Adventure Training offering. All those who attempt Ten Tors will undoubtedly remember it for the rest of their lives, and for many it will be a life changing experience.
