Mr Cunningham reflects on relationships, acts of kindness and significant moments in our lives.

I really enjoyed reading Mr Way’s interview in Muddy Stilettos this week. Even after working alongside him for six years and feeling that we know each other so well, the article still managed to surprise me. His admission that the top drawer of his desk holds not just pens, but also L’Occitane hand moisturiser, was something I simply never knew!

Mr Way also talked about the importance of the wooden organiser that has pride of place on his desk, and the sentimental value it holds. As someone who very much aspires to live a clutter-free life, it made me reflect on the objects in my own life that hold value – and perhaps that I should pay more attention to them. I am ruthless when it comes to getting rid of things I feel I no longer need, but honestly, this has sometimes led to me discarding items I later wish I’d kept. When that happens, there’s a real sense of loss.

Of course, I do have those special items I’d never part with – things that truly carry a memory of a person or a place. It’s often the same for children: a cuddly toy, or even a small piece of cloth, can become an anchor in a world that feels busy and ever-changing. In a time so driven by digital content, I’ve been reflecting on how important it is to have physical objects that connect us to memories.

Even the most committed minimalists might consider this more carefully. Items that remind us of relationships, acts of kindness, or significant moments in our lives have real value. As I often say when asked why I relentlessly pursue making our school the best it can be – you only get one shot, and it’s worth making the most of every minute, and remembering just how good things can be.
