Matthew Way reflects on the recent ISI report.

Whilst we broadly know that we are likely to inspected every three years, when the moment comes, we do not get much notice. On the Monday lunchtime of 19 January, we received the call from the Independent Schools Inspectorate to say that a team would arrive the following morning. By Tuesday, six inspectors were on site and the process had begun. With more than 600 regulatory standards to meet, the inspection is both rigorous and comprehensive, so achieving full compliance is an achievement in itself and a testament to the professionalism of our staff and the strength of the school’s systems.

The published report necessarily focuses on whether the standards are met, and as such it can read somewhat procedural. However, the inspectors’ verbal feedback and detailed notes offer a richer picture of the life of the school. They commented on the “high quality teaching and constructive staff-pupil relationships” they observed throughout the week.

The breadth of the Stonar curriculum was also highlighted. Inspectors noted that “your curriculum is broad, to have a wide range of subjects that stimulate pupils’ interest” and that learning is sequenced carefully across the different phases of the school. They were particularly struck by the enthusiasm of our teachers and the positive classroom culture, observing that “teachers are enthusiastic about pupils’ learning… with good behaviour in the classroom arising from very constructive attitudes and very good relationships with the pupils.”

A consistent theme in their feedback was the reflective nature of our pupils. Inspectors noted that “across the school pupils thoughtfully reflect on their learning and consider how they might improve their work”, supported by teachers who provide clear and helpful feedback that enables pupils to develop their skills and understanding.

Our pastoral care and safeguarding systems were also recognised as significant strengths. Inspectors highlighted that “pupil care is prioritised” supported by tutors, pastoral staff and confidential reporting systems, alongside “very effective and well-embedded systems to protect people”. They also commented on the way our core values guide the school’s decision-making, noting that “the school’s values of kindness and integrity guide leaders’ decisions”.

Particular praise was given to our Early Years provision, where “children made very good progress” supported by strong and empowering leadership.

Ultimately, the inspection affirmed what we strive to achieve each day: a school where pupils are supported, challenged and inspired to flourish. Inspectors concluded that our approach enables pupils to flourish both academically and personally, which is exactly the ambition we hold for every child at Stonar.
