Matthew Way wishes pupils and parents a happy and peaceful Christmas.
Earlier this week Rob Cunningham, Head of Prep, and I were discussing our respective Final Assemblies and commented that we could not remember such a packed, busy and vibrant term. The School is simply bursting with activity and I am bursting with pride at what has been achieved across our academic and co-curriculums.
In my Final Assembly, I asked the pupils to think about what they had done in school this term that had not been ‘required’ of them. I congratulated all those that had participated beyond the core curriculum, be that entering a Poetry or Art Competition, being in the play or the choir, being a Digital Leader, attending Science Club or playing in a school sports team. I challenged those who may not have got so involved to do so next term in order that they can sit in Assembly at the end of next term and think of something when I ask the same question. I am happy to say that this must be a very small minority.
Indeed, I also noted that it is only possible for the pupils to ‘get involved’ in so much because the staff arrange these extra things and I am again grateful for being lucky enough to have such a dedicated team of people who want to provide opportunities for our children. However, staff will only do these things because they know the pupils will participate. Running an activity with no pupils is not much fun! This desire to stretch, challenge and have fun is self-perpetuating. The staff want to give the children the opportunity, which they take up with enthusiasm and so the staff think of more opportunities.
This virtuous circle leads to things like today’s Christmas Carol Service at Bath Abbey, which was another wonderful occasion. It just seems to get better and better and the clarity of the readers, the beautiful melody of ‘O Holy Night’ and the sheer skill and joy of ‘Sheep, Sheep, Sheep’ will live long in the memory. For those that were unable to attend, I highly recommend the recording of the Service, which can be accessed via this link.
It simply remains for me to wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas.
