This week, we have had the privilege of being entertained by our children in Years 3 to 6 as they took to the stage for our summer production, Star Warts: The Umpire Strikes Back. While the audience enjoyed plenty of laughter, incredible performances and a wonderful parody of a much loved film, the real success of the show lay in what the children gained from the experience.

Productions such as this are about far more than creating future actors, singers or performers, although many of our children certainly demonstrated remarkable talent! They provide an opportunity for children to challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zones and discover what they are capable of achieving.

Over the course of rehearsals and performances, the children have learned lines, mastered songs, remembered choreography and worked together to bring the production to life. Along the way, they have also developed resilience, overcome nerves, solved problems, supported one another and learned the importance of commitment to a shared goal.

One of the songs in the production included the lyric: “There is a light to discover in the darkness, there is a light to uncover that’ll show us the way.” As I reflected on the performances this week, I was reminded that one of the greatest privileges of working with children is helping them discover that light within themselves. Every child possesses unique talents, strengths and qualities, and experiences such as this help those qualities to emerge and flourish.

At a time when the world can sometimes feel uncertain and complex, helping young people develop confidence, courage and self-belief feels more important than ever. We hope that every child who took part leaves with a greater understanding of their own potential and the confidence to continue sharing their talents with others.
