TEACHER TUESDAY: Jenny Redsull

Name, position at Stonar and when you joined

Jenny Redsull, EYFS Nursery Practitioner and Forest School Leader. I started working at Stonar around 2006, taking a year off to have my daughter who is now 8.

Tell us a bit about you

I grew up in Trowbridge with my mum and two older brothers, surrounded by fields where we spent endless hours climbing trees, jumping brooks, and exploring the outdoors. Holidays were spent visiting family in Northern Ireland, creating wonderful memories.

From a young age, I loved helping in the classroom, which sparked my passion for working with children. After studying Family & Community Care at Trowbridge College, I completed my NNEB qualification in Northern Ireland before returning to work in a local nursery for 10 years.

The moment I first visited Stonar, I was captivated—driving down that beautiful tree-lined avenue gave me an instant feeling of belonging. Even now, after so many years, I still feel the same sense of awe every day!

What is your favourite part about the job?

My favourite part of the job is watching the children grow in confidence. Whether it's learning to put on their own coat or preparing for the exciting step into school. It's incredibly special to see children move up through Stonar, and even more amazing when past pupils return, like Miss Criddle, who came back during her gap year to support sports at school!

The teamwork in Nursery is also a huge highlight. You need a good sense of humour, the ability to laugh at yourself, and, most importantly, the willingness to get silly, dress up, and embrace the mess! Every day is an adventure, and I've been fortunate to work with incredible colleagues who have shaped my journey.

Why is outdoor learning important?

Growing up, I spent as much time outdoors as possible - climbing trees, picking flower petals to make “perfume,” and embracing the freedom of nature. I believe every child should have the same opportunity to explore the natural world.

Outdoor learning is about hands-on experiences, building confidence, overcoming challenges, and taking risks. It encourages teamwork and helps develop essential social skills. From toddlerhood to young adulthood (ages 2-18), children at Stonar engage in a wide range of outdoor learning - from observing seasonal changes to using tools in the forest, whittling wood, building dens, and even making a fire to enjoy hot chocolate or cook bannock bread on a stick.

And the best part? We go out in all weathers! A little mud is always a sign of a great adventure.

What are your hobbies?

Outside of school, I love exploring National Trust sites, going on local walks (Westbury White Horse is a favourite), and reading everything from romance to murder mysteries. I also love spending time in the garden, sometimes lighting the fire pit to roast marshmallows. In addition, I am a big Bath Rugby fan! I love going to watch the Rugby with my brothers.

Fun Fact

I am a bit of a petrol head! I enjoy the supercars like McLarens, Porsches, and my all-time favourite, the Mustang. One day, I'd love to have a track day and take them for a spin!
