TEACHER TUESDAY: Austen O'Hanlon
Name, position at Stonar and when you joined
My name is Austen O’Hanlon, I am the Head of the Creative and Technology Faculty. I joined Stonar in September 2014
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I grew up in North london and moved to Bath when I was twelve. Ever since a young age I have had a passion for and interest in art. I am a photographer and artist specialising in landscape photography and art. I am looking to capture the beauty of landscapes, including rural countryside scenes and dramatic natural vistas, both locally and on my travels. I look for the subtle relationship between nature and light, composing visual stories with a strong sense of place. Genuine images provoke genuine responses and in a world that is becoming more influenced by AI, it is even more important to me that the relationship between the artist and the audience is one of trust and respect. I regularly exhibit my work in Bath and the surrounding area, and my photographs have also been featured in publications, including Outdoor Photography Magazine.
What is your favourite part about the job?
I love helping pupils connect with the world around them through art and photography. Watching them develop a strong sense of identity and individuality through their creative expression is incredibly rewarding. As they explore their creativity, they start to see the world in a new light, questioning and understanding it on a deeper, more meaningful level. Art not only helps them find their voice, but also encourages them to engage critically with the world, fostering both personal growth and a greater awareness of their surroundings.
What is a fun fact about you?
My father was a saloon car racing driver for Alfa Romeo, so I spent much of my childhood at the side of the racetrack and surrounded by mechanics. I developed a deep appreciation for cars and racing from a young age. One of my favorite cars of all time is the Alfa Romeo TZ – my father actually owned two of them, but unfortunately, he sold both. To this day, I can’t help but reminisce about those cars and the incredible experiences I had in the world of motorsports.
What do you like to do in your free time/ hobbies?
Outside of school, I’m passionate about photography and painting, particularly focusing on landscapes. I spend a lot of time exploring my local environment, always seeking new perspectives and inspiration. My travels have also played a significant role in shaping my work; I’ve had the privilege of visiting several countries, including Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. These diverse landscapes have broadened my creative horizons and allowed me to capture the beauty and natural surroundings.
