Second place for Stonar robotics!

Ten Year 7 pupils represented Stonar at the 2014 First Lego League Robotics Challenge at the HP Labs in Bristol.

The Robotics Challenge involves designing a robot and programming it to complete as many tasks as possible in three two and a half minute games. This year's theme for the competition was Learning Unleashed, an attempt to look at different ways we learn new skills and information.

The Stonar team chose to focus on how we could improve the way we learn to play the piano and came up with an interactive keyboard which could help speed up the learning process.

The highest scorers from these heats went forward to complete in the finals. In addition, each team had to give a presentation to judges and two other schools, in which they discussed a novel approach to learning a new skill.

Overall the school was awarded second place out of 23 schools for the presentation project– a wonderful achievement, particularly as they were one of the youngest teams in the competition which has teams up to Year 11.

The team also qualified as individuals to receive the Silver Crest Award. CREST is a UK award scheme recognising success, building skills and demonstrating personal achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) project work. UCAS endorse CREST Awards for inclusion in students' personal statements – they're well regarded, high-quality and a tangible recognition of success.
