GCSE (Key Stage 4)

Core Subjects

In Years 10 and 11 all students take GCSE courses in:

  • Mathematics, English Language, English Literature and Science

All students study Core and Additional Science courses; Triple Science and an additional GCSE in Statistics are offered to suitable candidates.  The students are set by ability for lessons in English, Mathematics and Science.

All students also follow courses in Religious Studies and Information Technology and take the GCSE short course exams at the end of Year 11. The option is available to take extra lessons and make up the full course in either of these subjects.

EAL

  • Students for whom English is not a first language normally follow the IGCSE English course in place of English Language and Literature.

Additional subjects

As well as the compulsory subjects, students choose up to four GCSEs from the following:

Art
Drama
French
Geography
History

Home Economics
Music
Physical Education
Spanish

Staff will advise students in choosing a suitable combination of subjects. These subjects are arranged in blocks and not all combinations are possible, however we endeavour to allow students to follow the courses of their choice.

Students will also follow non-examined courses in PE and Games and a programme of Personal, Social and Health Education. From Year 10 girls are able to take up the Duke of Edinburgh Award as part of the activities programme.

At the beginning of the Spring Term in Year 11, students take mock GCSE exams under conditions as close as possible to those of the public exams.
